If there's one thing I've learned in my journey, it's that the mind is a powerful tool. It can either be our greatest ally or our worst enemy. And when not properly managed, it can lead to issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression. But don't worry, there lies a golden technique to keep this under control - mindfulness.
Mindfulness is simply the practice of being fully present in the moment. Yes, right here, right now, as simple as it may sound, it's quite a challenge for many of us. Our minds are usually either ruminating about the past or worrying about the future, and not simply being present. But when we practice mindfulness, we are essentially training our brain to focus on the here and now, and it's been scientifically proven to reduce stress and boost mental well-being. So how does Harper, you might ask, practice mindfulness? Well, darling, I'm glad you asked.
I want you all to know that my journey with mindfulness wasn't something I mastered overnight. Nope. It actually started with my Golden Retriever, Rusty. Rusty is a living, breathing example of mindfulness. When Rusty plays fetch, he's not thinking about that one time he dropped the ball or what's for dinner later. He's ALL IN, fully present, and fully excited about that ball. Observing Rusty, I learned the importance of dedicating yourself completely to the moment at hand. So, if Rusty can master mindfulness, so can we, right?
Another technique in my relaxation regimen is deep breathing. Just like the name suggests, it's all about taking slow, deep, and full breaths. Sounds easy, but again, quite a challenge if you've been a shallow breather your whole life. But it's worth every effort as this simple technique has been proven to activate the body's relaxation response leading to lower stress levels.
So let me share with you my favourite deep breathing method – the 4-7-8 technique. It goes something like this: breathe in quietly through the nose for 4 seconds, hold the breath for a count of 7 seconds, and exhale forcefully through the mouth, pursing the lips and making a "whoosh" sound, for 8 seconds. That's it! But don't be fooled by its simplicity – the effects are profound.
There's nothing quite like a good, warm, soothing bath. As soon as I sink into that fragrant, bubbly water, I can almost feel my worries just washing away.
Apart from being utterly relaxing, baths can also have several health benefits. The warm water increases blood circulation, which aids in the healing and regeneration of our bodies. Additionally, baths can assist with pain relief, especially muscular aches and tension. Most importantly, it offers a quiet time for contemplation and mindfulness.
If you believe baths are not your thing, I urge you to give it another go. Add some bubble bath or bath oils, light aromatic candles, play some calming music. Go all out and create your little sanctuary. Trust Harper on this and indulge yourself.
Aromatherapy is one of my secret weapons to recharge my mind and body. In fact, it's an age-old practice of using essential oils for healing and relaxation. These potent oils are derived from plants and have been known to impact mood, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being.
If you're new to this, start simple. Lavender, for instance, is known for its calming properties, and can promote better sleep. So, a few drops of this wonder potion in your bath or pillow can work wonders. While oils like rosemary or peppermint are known to stimulate the senses, ideal for those sluggish mornings when you need a little pick-me-up. Remember, every scent has its purpose, and it's about finding the ones that resonate with you.
Boy, oh, boy! What would Harper do without her daily dose of dance-ercise? Yes, you heard/re-read me right. Dancing is not just fun, but it's therapeutic, a natural stress-buster. It’s not a mere physical activity, but a perfect blend of creative expression and physical exertion.
I’m not suggesting that you all sign up for professional dance classes (though that would be wonderful, wouldn’t it?), but even freestyle unchoreographed session in the solitude of your bedroom can work wonders! Bust some moves, let that hair down, and dance like no one's watching. Trust me, there’s something purely exhilarating about it.
Creativity is therapeutic, that’s a fact! Art, in any form, can be a tremendously enjoyable & effective stress buster. Be it painting, knitting, or even just doodling - the choice is yours.
The very process of creation can be a distraction, moving your mind away from worries. As a result, your heart rate reduces, your mind clears and you release the negativity that might be blocked inside you. So, if you haven't already, I urge you to discover what sort of artistic activity resonates best with your spirit.
Lastly, we can't speak about relaxation techniques without bringing up affirmations and visualisations. Positive thoughts, repeated over time, can alter the neural paths in our brain. This can have a powerful influence on our mood, habits, and even our reality (How cool is science, right?)
Then next is visualisation – this is where you imagine your desire as already achieved. Be it a peaceful mind, a healthy body, a prosperous job, or even a loving relationship; paint a vivid picture in your mind. This powerful mental exercise amplifies your ability to manifest your desires. So, my lovelies, think positive, visualise success, and watch it unfold.
If you have stayed with me until here, thank you. I sincerely hope that these techniques serve you as wonderfully as they have served me. Life can get chaotic and it gets even more essential to master the art of relaxing at such times. Remember, it's the small practices that inculcate peace, joy, and tranquility in our daily life. So, take some time for yourself, breathe, re-center, and let's recharge our mind and body.
